"I think it is the first book by a prize-winning Latin American writer to be published in Australia for national and international distribution," says its translator, Roy Boland, who is honorary professor of Spanish and Latin American studies at the University of Sydney.

The Apocalypse According to Benedict is a racy, part-phantasmagorical sex-religion South American novel, for which Bedoya has won a PEN American Award. The English version will be launched on April 23. Bedoya agrees it is prophetic, with the possible exception of the bit about the pope running away to a convent with a nun after resigning. Strewth thinks it's a bit early to rule it out.
